Trick or Bleed season: what changes, who wins and what to build

The Trick or Bleed season turns your Commander's HP into a resource.

Full context

The Trick or Bleed season turns your Commander's HP into a resource. Of the nine new cards (one Legendary Captain, four Minions and four Variants), five deal with missing HP or healing. Below is what the official notice says about each one, the math the wiki did on top of that text, and our opinion, always marked as analysis. Mister Hiss, Bamboscout, Will-o-Cut and the four Variants have been in the deck builder's simulator since Oct 26. Pumpkin King joined on Nov 2, and the wiki hasn't measured his decks yet. The math below comes from the official text, with no deck score.

IF YOU'RE JUST STARTING

  • Bamboscout (800 Power) and Will-o-Cut (1,100 Power) are free on the Power Track. Pumpkin King comes with the Glory Pass, which is paid, and Mister Hiss comes from Lucky Recruit.
  • At 600 Power you get +5 trophies per Ranked win, on the free track. At 1,000, another +5. Over 20 wins, both bonuses add 200 extra trophies. Wiki analysis: for free-to-play players, that's the first goal of the season, ahead of any new card.
  • The season-end reset is gentler. In Ranked, players who reach 10,000 and 12,000 Trophies reset to 4,800. In Rumble Chess, they reset to 1,500.

COUNT DRACULA AND THE MISSING-HP MATH

The official text: at Match Start, your Captain's Max HP goes up by +50%/75%/100%, and current HP doesn't change.

Details and source

Wiki deduction: the match starts with 33%, 43% or 50% of your HP missing (0.5 ÷ 1.5, 0.75 ÷ 1.75 and 1 ÷ 2). For cards that count every 10% lost, like Headless Jack and Pumpkin King, that's 3, 4 or 5 free steps before the first hit. With 150 HP (what the Commander has from 3,000 Trophies) and the 100% bonus, Max HP goes to 300 and you still have 150.

The downside is that anything taking a percentage of Max HP gets pricier: Jack-o'-Licks I's 4% becomes 12 HP instead of 6. The upside is easy to miss: healing has room to fill, because the 150 Dracula opened up are empty.

Wiki opinion: this is the season's Captain for the low-HP deck. It meets the condition Pumpkin King and Headless Jack ask for, for free.

THE FOUR NEW MINIONS

Pumpkin King. Deploy: all Minions gain +2 ATK for every 10% HP the Captain is missing. The Oct 22 notice said +2/4/8 by star, but the card sheet in game shows +2 at all three stars (screenshot from Nov 2), and the sheet is what counts. With level, the bonus goes to 2-3 at level 8, 3 at 9, 4 at 11 and 5 at 12. At level 10, the effect triggers 1 extra time on him for every empty tile on the field. With the Commander at 50%, that's +10 ATK on every Minion at once, or +25 at level 12. He has his own article, with three decks, combos and the ATK chart: Pumpkin King: decks, combos and the wiki's take.

Details and source

Mister Hiss. Enemies are corroded when they enter the field and take 20%/27%/40% of his ATK every 2.6 sec. Enemies with Shield lose 2 stacks instead of taking damage. As his level increases, the corrosion ticks faster and reaches 30%/41%/60% Penetrate damage.

Wiki math: at 3★ and base level, that's about 15% of his ATK per second on every enemy (40% every 2.6 sec). It's area damage that grows with his ATK. Wiki deduction: against Shield decks, he burns the stacks before your attackers get there.

His Astral Blessing (Ready: absorbs 15% ATK from other allied Minions) makes him the deck's carry, because the ATK he pulls turns into corrosion on everyone. Wiki opinion: without the blessing he loses most of his appeal, and it doesn't apply in Rumble Chess, Friendly Scrims (Balanced Mode) or Extreme Challenges.

Bamboscout. ATK SPD +140%, and each attack deals 30%/35%/40% damage. As his level increases, the speed bonus reaches +260%.

Wiki math: per second, he deals 2.4 × 30% = 72% of a regular attacker's damage at 1★, 84% at 2★ and 96% at 3★. At max level, with 3.6 attacks per normal attack, that becomes 108%, 126% and 144%. Wiki deduction: his value is the number of hits, so he pairs with effects that trigger on every attack.

Wiki opinion: he's the easiest new card to get, but only beats a regular attacker at high level. If you're starting out, grab him and level him slowly.

Will-o-Cut. Deploy: removes the selected Minion and splits 120% of its ATK evenly and temporarily among the others. As its level increases, that reaches 200%.

Wiki math: removing a 300 ATK Minion gives 360 Temp. ATK. With 6 Minions left, that's 60 each. At max, 600, or 100 each. Wiki deduction: the removed Minion's tile is left empty, and empty tiles are what a level 10 Pumpkin King wants.

Wiki opinion: the hard part is picking who leaves. The best target is a Minion that already did its job when it entered.

THE FOUR VARIANTS

Jack-o'-Licks I. Ready: gains ATK +1/2/4 to +2/4/8, and the Captain loses 6%/5%/4% of Max HP. The skill fails if it would kill the Captain. As his level increases, the gain reaches +1/2/4 to +10/20/40.

Details and source

Base Jack-o'-Licks takes HP once, when it enters. Variant I takes it every round. Wiki math: over 8 rounds at 3★, that's 32% of Max HP, or 3 steps for Pumpkin King and Headless Jack. And it never kills you, because its own text blocks the last hit.

Headless Jack I. Gains ATK +2/4/8 each time the Captain takes damage, doubled during the Ready phase. As his level increases, that reaches +7/14/28.

The base reads how much HP is missing. Variant I counts how many times you get hit. Wiki deduction: Jack-o'-Licks I takes HP exactly during Ready, so each of its rounds counts double for Headless Jack I (+4/8/16 at base text). And since the text doesn't say Temp., the ATK stays even if you heal later.

Greenkeeper II. Deploy: heals the Captain for 4 HP, and each purchase raises its cost by 1. The heal reaches 14 HP with level.

Base Greenkeeper also spreads ATK among your other Minions. Variant II only heals, and costs more every time. Wiki opinion: it fights Pumpkin King, because every 10% healed is one step fewer. It makes more sense with Count Dracula in a deck that wants to hold on, not one that wants to bleed.

Leafy Trap I. Transfers the 1/2/4 highest-HP Rush Squad Units on the field to the opponent, with 50% of their Max HP. Then the Minion is removed, and in Boss Rounds it sleeps. As its level increases, the HP reaches 180%.

Base Leafy Trap takes 1 unit. Wiki deduction: we read it as the units from his wave that are on your field going back to attack his side. At max level, they go back with almost twice the HP they had. Wiki opinion: it's the best new answer to summon decks, which send many units at once.

ASTRAL BLESSINGS

Season Blessings became Astral Blessings: each Minion with a blessing gains an extra ability for the whole season. Blessings for the new Minions unlock at the start. Those for existing Minions roll out two a week, for Pomblaster, Wicked Mirror, Bombercarrot, Glowkeeper, Gourmand Baker and Tumbleroller. Pumpkin King's makes the next Pumpkin King cost 1 less every time the Captain takes damage.

Details and source

Wiki analysis: a top player told us last season's blessing changed the game so much that sending match data wasn't even worth it. Since blessings don't apply in Rumble Chess, Friendly Scrims (Balanced Mode) or Extreme Challenges, a deck tested in Ranked may do much worse in those modes. Test in both before leveling the cards.

RANKED, CLUBS AND CO-OP

  • Glory Track: once you enter the League, Glory Crowns appear. Each one permanently raises your League Reward Level, which carries over between seasons.
  • Power Track: gets a third phase, from 600 to 1,200 Power.
  • Season Coins: in Ranked, from 6,000 to 12,000 Trophies, rewards reach 6,500. In Rumble Chess, from 4,000 to 9,000 Trophies, also 6,500. The Top 100 of both modes earn more.
  • Boss Battle moves to Club Points Race, with three stages of Giant Boss battles and no difficulty selection. Points Race moves to Boss Battle and is renamed Extreme Challenges, with difficulty levels.
  • In Points Race you can import standard decks, copy another player's deck and share yours in chat, and your deck is no longer wiped each season.
  • Club Coins: ranking rewards get slightly lower and the personal cap goes up a lot. Clubs get the Diamond Division.
  • Co-op: clearing the week's stage unlocks Super Blitz. With 2 Blitz Tickets you instantly claim the reward of your highest cleared round.
  • Chat: dynamic World and Party channels.

QUICK QUESTIONS

Is the Glory Pass worth it for Pumpkin King? Wiki opinion: yes, if you already play the low-HP deck with Headless Jack and Boom Shroom. Outside it, the King depends on you being hurt and does little.

Which new card should I get first without spending? Bamboscout, which comes earlier on the Power Track and needs no combo.

Does the deck builder have the new cards yet? Mister Hiss, Bamboscout, Will-o-Cut and the four Variants count in the deck builder's score since Oct 26. Pumpkin King joined the simulator on Nov 2, but the wiki hasn't measured his decks yet. The Oct 27 balance changes to 14 Minions and to Rumble Chess are in the Oct 27 adjustments post.
