Is Chuckleberry unstoppable?

Is Chuckleberry unstoppable?

Chuckleberry is the most talked-about card of the Sea Rebel Season.

Full context

Chuckleberry is the most talked-about card of the Sea Rebel Season. Some players in the community say it wins the game by round 2. The math below uses the official text for each level and numbers checked in game.

WHAT IT DOES

  • Cost 8, Legendary, starts at level 7. 18 ATK at 1★, attacks every 2 s.
  • Level 8: each clone that doesn't fit on the board gives 60% of its ATK to another Minion. At level 7 the text doesn't give a percentage.
  • Level 9: that bonus goes up to 100%.
  • Levels 10, 11 and 12: 4, 5 and 6 clones.
  • It comes from the season Battle Pass.
Details and source

Deploy: creates 3 clones of this Minion. If there are no empty tiles, grants a random other Minion ATK based on Chuckleberry's ATK.

BODIES EARLY, BUFFS LATER

In round 1 the board is empty and the clones come in as 18 ATK Minions. That's where the "72 ATK in round 1" comes from: with the Candlemancer Badge, your first Shop refresh is free and always reveals 1 Cost 8 Minion, and round 1 gives you 10 Sun. If that Cost 8 Minion is Chuckleberry, it comes in with 3 clones (4 × 18 = 72). If it's another one, it waits.

Details and source

From the middle of the game on, the board is already full and Chuckleberry changes jobs. Every clone that doesn't fit becomes ATK on one of your Minions, and from level 9 on that bonus is 100% of its ATK: the same value the clone would have on the board, without using a tile. The play is to leave exactly 1 tile free and buy Chuckleberry. It takes that tile, and every clone turns into a bonus.

The bonuses land on random Minions, so the ATK spreads across the board instead of all going to your carry.

CHUCKLEBERRY VS GOURMAND BAKER

Gourmand Baker is also a buff card: on every Ready it makes bread on an empty tile, and the Minion that picks it up gains ATK.

At level 12, one Chuckleberry purchase on a full board delivers 108 ATK (6 × 18). Bread from a 1★ Gourmand Baker gives 12, and from a 3★, 48. The Baker repeats the bread every round, but the 3★ needs more than 2 rounds to add up what Chuckleberry delivers in one purchase, and every bread needs an empty tile. That's why the two clash on the same board: the Baker wants free tiles and Chuckleberry wants a full board.

THE COMBO: BUFF IT IN THE SHOP

  • Chili Chef: on every Ready, Minions in the Shop gain ATK (+16 at 3★, level 12).
  • Azure Astrologer: on every Ready, a frozen Minion in the Shop gains ATK (+40 at 3★, level 12). Freeze only Chuckleberry so it's the target.
  • Grape Gatsby (+2 or +3 to Minions in the Shop on every purchase) and Camellia Clerk II (+1 to +5 to the other Minions in the Shop when it appears) add less, but they count too.

  • The English text calls each clone a "summon". If the game treats it that way, Sir Rose and Ginger Honcho react to every clone.
  • The Extraordinary Magic Season Blessing turns, on Ready, every Chuckleberry on the board into a random Cost 3 or 5 Minion from your deck. With it, the clones become copies of your other cards.
Details and source

The clones and the bonuses copy the ATK it has when you buy it, Shop buffs included. The game team gave this tip in the news video: buff Minions in the Shop, then release Chuckleberry. At level 12, every +1 ATK it gains in the Shop becomes +6 on your Minions.

With Chili Chef and Azure Astrologer at 3★ and level 12, one round with Chuckleberry frozen takes it to 74 ATK, and one purchase on a full board delivers 444. With two rounds, 780.

WHAT STOPS IT

Details and source

In the bodies phase, the clones send lots of Attack Units, and cards that hit several enemies at once handle that wave well: Apple Sheriff attacks 6 to 8 enemies at a time, and Thornmelon hits all of them whenever your Commander takes damage. In the buff phase your Minions get bigger without getting more numerous, so that kind of answer matters less.

VERDICT

It isn't unstoppable. At levels 7 and 8 it depends on Shop luck or ends up as a pile of 18 ATK bodies. From level 9 on, on a full board, every purchase is worth as much as the clones without using a tile, and at level 12 one unbuffed purchase already beats 2 rounds of bread from a 3★ Gourmand Baker. With Chili Chef and Azure Astrologer buffing it in the Shop, one purchase goes past 400 ATK.

IF YOU'RE JUST STARTING

Chuckleberry is a cost-8 Legendary from the season Battle Pass, so it already arrives at level 7. You can play it well without doing any math:

  • In the first rounds, buy it with empty tiles. It and its 3 clones take 4 tiles at once, each with 18 ATK.
  • From mid-game on, with the board almost full, leave 1 tile free and buy. Chuckleberry takes that tile and the clones turn into ATK on your Minions. The game team summed it up in the preview video: got space, more Chuckleberries; no space, a stronger team.
  • If you have Chili Chef or Azure Astrologer, freeze Chuckleberry in the Shop before buying. Shop buffs carry over to the clones.
  • It costs 8, so wait until you have Sun to spare. The Sun economy guide shows how much Sun comes in each round.
  • Still to check in game: whether the clones can be merged with each other to raise their ★.

WHAT THE SIMULATOR SAYS NOW (OCT 21)

Since this analysis came out, the wiki simulator plays Chuckleberry with a real board and Shop. The numbers from Oct 21:

  • Tier S on the simulator tier list, scoring 89.8 out of 100.
  • Used in 15 of 34 strong-player decks, tied with DandeLion as the third most used, behind Tomato Twister (22) and Turnipette (21).
  • Simulator gain: +4.7 points at level 10 and +11 at level 12. The card grows with level, as the math above predicted.
  • Prebuilt deck builder decks with Chuckleberry: control (score 67 with a 105 HP Captain, alongside Tomato Twister, Rosen Death and DandeLion) and low HP (score 71 with 150 HP, alongside Headless Jack).

By the wiki's yardstick, the verdict above still holds: it isn't unstoppable, but it's one of the strongest cards of the season, and almost half the top decks run it.
